When children were little, I used to travel frequently for my work. The moment I looked forward to the most was seeing the boys’ cute faces when they opened the door for me after a long trip. They never stopped surprising me what they were going to tell me, and I loved those surprises.
One day, I got off the taxi, Skye was already waiting for me at the front door. The expression on his face was telling me that there was something urgent. Instead of usual greetings and hugs, this was the request that I received from my then 3.5 year-old son.
“Mummy, please pack up for me immediately! I need to leave now.” I got a bit of shock. “Sweetheart, what’s the matter? Why is so urgent? Where are you going?”
“I am going to Saturn. It’s a long way. I really need to leave now. It will be too late if I don’t.”
“But Saturn is a long way from here. It will take years to get there.” I tried to reason with him.
“I know. That’s why I have to leave now. So I can get there before I die.” Sky said urgently.
“But no one has ever gone there before.” I was still confused, but felt pressure at the same time.
“I want to be the first person to go to Saturn!”
I have to admit at the time, I believed if there would be one human being who would ever go to another planet to live, it had to be my Skye. He looked so serious that I started thinking what to pack for him.
Sooner after, Skye realised that his severe motion sickness might never let him travel that far. So he started educating Thomas and wanted Thomas to go to Mars on his behalf.
Skye saw planets in the actual sequential order through his Spatial Sequence Synaesthesia just like what is shown on the attached image. Each planet has a colour or colours, and each has its own personalities. Under Skye’s influence, Thomas too developed his love of planets, and Spatial Sequence Synaesthesia in planets.
As Thomas was telling me he saw number 9999 somewhere in the sky, it was dark outside. He leaned against the window and gazed into the sky. “Mummy, I can see planets too.” I had a real shock. Then he drew me a diagram to show me what he saw. The pattern looked similar to his number sequence, but with two planets on one horizontal or vertical line only. It started with Mercury, followed by all dwarf planets such as Eris, Makemake, Ceres, and further followed by other planets according to their distance to the Sun.
In my mind, my children’s spatial perception takes Spatial Sequence Synaesthesia to another level, a level which I have never contemplated. Their perceptions are so vast, I quite often think that they might mind travel across planets and feel the sensation that makes the experience so real.
I am traveling for work again this week after many relaxing months without much work related travel. I am sitting at the airport waiting to board. I am wondering what surprises will come my way tonight when I arrive home ……
